About Sound Shore Health System
In 1997, Mount Vernon Hospital (MVH), Sound Shore Medical Center (SSMC), Dorothea Hopfer School of Nursing and Schaffer Extended Care Center (SECC) affiliated to create one of the largest private healthcare systems between New York City and Albany - Sound Shore Health System. This association, with the addition in 2001 of the Visiting Nurse Association of Hudson Valley, has provided the region with a broader scope of enhanced, quality programs and services.
Mount Vernon Hospital - Mount Vernon, NY Established in 1891, MVH is a 196-bed teaching affiliate of New York Medical College and a New York State Designated: Stroke Center and Transitional Care Unit Demonstration Hospital (one of only five statewide). It is home to the Assertive Community Treatment Program, The Family Health and Wellness Center and Intensive Case Management Program, the Chronic Wound and Hyperbaric Treatment Center and the Westchester Low Back Pain Center.
Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester - New Rochelle, NY Established in 1892, SSMC is 252-bed major teaching affiliate of New York Medical College and a New York State Designated: Area Trauma Center, Perinatal Hospital and Stroke Center. It is a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery, approved by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons for our high-quality cancer programs, and our Antepartum Testing Lab is a Center of Excellence for 1st Trimester Screening. Sound Shore is home to the Center for Arthritis and Total Joint Surgery, the Spine Center, Cancer Center, Sleep Center and Breast Center and Center for Sound Aging as well as the Adult Day Services Center. Sound Shore Medical Center's clinical results on heart failure, pneumonia, heart attack, and surgical patients - as reported by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services - reflect our care as better than the New York State and U.S. averages in many measures, and in a number the outcomes rank us in the top10% of the hospitals in the country.
Helen & Michael Schaffer Extended Care Center - New Rochelle, NY -located on the campus of Sound Shore Medical Center- Established in 1971, Schaffer is a 150-bed facility conveniently located on the campus of Sound Shore Medical Center. SECC dedicates 100-beds for long-term skilled medical management for individuals with chronic conditions or disabilities who are no longer capable to live independently. Schaffer also offers 50-beds for short-term/rehabilitation for those patients recovering from heart surgery, heart attacks, strokes, and orthopaedic surgery.
Dorothea Hopfer School of Nursing -Mount Vernon, NY -located at Mount Vernon Hospital- Since it's founding in 1901 as the Mount Vernon Hospital School of Nursing, Hopfer has provided quality education in the art and science of nursing - providing a strong foundation in theory and hands-on practice in a hospital-based setting. Graduates earn an Associate Degree in Science (Nursing) and are well prepared to take the required state licensing exam for Registered Nurse.
